Because as we put it together for our own use, we were amazed by its variety. For aspiring founders, we hope these companies — representing many verticals, locations, and stages of growth — inspire you to pursue your vision. Despite the fiscal landscape, now is a <strong>great</strong> time to start a startup — and as this list shows, tremendous startups can come in many, many forms. </p><p>As revenue is confidential for most of these companies, we’re not exposing the specific revenue amounts — likewise, companies are listed in alphabetical order. The companies featured have all generated above a certain threshold of net revenue in 2022 and submitted audited financials reflecting 2022 full year net revenue (not GMV, sales, or ARR).¹</p><p><strong>Here are stats about the companies on the list:</strong></p><ul><li>The total revenue generated by these companies in 2022 is more than $50B</li><li>The companies have collectively raised $40B; they are collectively valued at $400B</li><li>Each company on the list is valued at more than $150M</li><li>15 companies (30%) have had an exit, with 12 of those being publicly traded</li><li>Together, these 50 companies employ over 70k people</li><li>74% have remote working options for employees</li><li>70% have an office in the Bay Area</li><li>22% have an office outside of the United States</li><li>The vast majority of these companies were founded by 2 (55%) or 3 (32%) co-founders</li><li>The three companies on the list that most recently went through YC are <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/whatnot/">Whatnot (W20), <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/deel/">Deel (W19), and <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/nowports/">Nowports (W19)</li><li>The S12 batch appears most frequently on the list with Benchling, Coinbase, Instacart, SmartAsset, and Zapier</li><li>The W12, W14, and W15 batches appear second most frequently on the list with four companies each</li></ul><!--kg-card-begin: markdown--><ul>\n<li>6 sectors are represented, including:\n<ul>\n<li>B2B software and services (50%)</li>\n<li>Consumer (22%)</li>\n<li>Financial technology and services (18%)</li>\n<li>Healthcare (6%)</li>\n<li>Industrials (2%)</li>\n<li>Real estate and construction (2%)</li>\n</ul>\n</li>\n</ul>\n<!--kg-card-end: markdown--><hr><p><em>^{<strong>1 </strong>For companies that were acquired, we collected revenue associated only with the legacy business that Y Combinator originally funded. If they pay you in this tough environment, it's a stronger signal. There’s a higher likelihood you’re building something they really want.</p><p>And though our <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/deal/">new standard deal</a> of $500,000 gives you some slack, you will likely have to develop very smart habits around spending because fundraising is harder. Learning how to <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"http://www.paulgraham.com/aord.html/">stay alive</a> is arguably the most important skill you can have as a founder.</p><p>I don’t think it’s a coincidence that two of the top YC companies, Airbnb and Stripe, were started in the depths of the last recession (2009).* They learned how important it is to build something people want and not assume investors will be there to save them early on.</p><p>None of this is new. It’s common knowledge, especially in the tech community, that many successful startups were created during recessions (just search “startups + recession” and you’ll find a bunch of articles), which may be one reason we’ve seen high numbers of applications from founders leaving their big tech company jobs, especially in the last couple of months.</p><p>If running a startup is like commanding an army, then YC is elite basic training. You’ll learn how to navigate the challenges (or realize you’re not up for it) when your company is small and with the support of advisors and YC batchmates. You’ll build a solid foundation of learning how to build something people want and staying alive. </p><p>The YC training prepares you by default for succeeding through recessions. And it’s easier to internalize that training today when the macroenvironment supports it. The alternative is learning it on the battlefield when the stakes are way higher — when you’ve already raised money and have employees who depend on you. </p><p>As YC founder Paul Graham <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"http://www.paulgraham.com/die.html/">wrote, “Bad shit is coming. It always is in a startup.” If you’re interested in starting a startup, we’re entering a counterintuitively good time to do it. It won’t be easy, but if you get through the early days, you’ll be better prepared than most. And if the challenge excites you, you probably have the right personality for it.</p><p>*Their products were also tailored to a cost-sensitive environment.
